What in the world does Shabundy's mean?
Eugene Freedman is the inspiration in every way for Shabundy's. That's why it's named after him. Many years ago, while attending Champlain College, for a few extra bucks, Eugene was a bouncer at a bar in town. Problem was, "Eugene Freedman" was not the kind of name to really make anyone shiver in their boots. That's when Eugene adopted the name "Geno Shabundy". Now, repeat it with a "raspy" voice and in your best New York/Italian accent. Sounds a lot better, right? While few knew Eugene's self-declared nickname, his wife of 65 years, Claire often called him "Shabundy" inside the four walls of their home in Scarsdale, NY. Now you know the story of Shabundy! "The Only Thing That Makes Me Happier Than Getting a Great Deal For Myself Is to Get a Great Deal for Friends" Eugene always had "a guy"... The butcher had Eugene cuts. The bagel guy knew when they were hot, Gene would be by. Lobsters here, Bermuda shorts there, you name it, he knew where to get it! Shopping was a sport in the Freedman home. It earned him the title of "Omdiscant" or omniscient of all discounts. Shabundy's is just that! It's the place where you have to pinch yourself to believe the deal was really that good. If you found us, you are truly on the "inside". Pat yourself on the back, you have earned the Geno stamp of approval.
